On February 1, 2021, Myanmar's military seized control of the country and declared a year-long state of emergency. This coup was a response to a general election which saw the National League for Democracy win. Myanmar is located in South East Asia, near Thailand, China, and India. It is also known as Burma and has a population of roughly 54 million. The military that executed the coup demanded a recount of the vote (sounds a bit like a recent election in the United States).
In one of the bloodiest days of protest since February, 90 people were killed by security forces across the country. Protestors were prevalent across the country, and the military warned that they were at risk of being shot. Most of the deaths occurred in the Bango region and Sagaing region. In total, 328 people have been killed following the coup. The US response after the coup was to condemn the attempt to alter the outcome of Myanmar's elections and democratic transition. The European union and the United States would impose sanctions on the group involved in the military coup. These sanctions include adopting travel bans and freezing assets on popular individuals of the military coup.
