On June 11, the Euro 2020 tournament kicks off with Italy vs Turkey. The European soccer tournament that was originally scheduled for 2020 but pushed back due to Covid, is finally underway in 2021. This tournament occurs every four years and involves European countries that qualify to participate in the tournament. The competition in 2016 saw Portugal beat France 1-0 to win the championship.
There are 6 groups (A-F) and the top two teams advance to the next round as well as four third place teams with the highest point totals. From there, the 16 teams participate in a knockout stage where the winner keeps advancing until they reach the championship. This tournament spans across 11 cities in Europe with the final culminating in London, England. The winning team will receive $10 million. The favorites coming into this tournament are recent world cup winners France and a resurging England. Belgium, Portugal, Spain, and Germany are some more names among others who are participating as well. Most of the games are being broadcast on ESPN. It will be interesting to see which country wins the Euro tournament this year.

After Covid-19, many are wary of diseases originating from animals. Just recently, China reported a case of infection with a strain of bird flu called H10N3. A 41-year-old man was hospitalized on April 28 and diagnosed with the disease a month later. There is no news on how he was infected; as for now, his condition is stable. The NHC, or Beijing's National Health Commission stated that the disease is unlikely to cause a large-scale outbreak and there is no indication of whether human transmission is possible.
This flu is an avian virus that typically isn't supposed to spread among humans. The World Health Organization stated that, "As long as avian influenza viruses circulate in poultry, sporadic infection of avian influenza in humans is not surprising, which is a vivid reminder that the threat of an influenza pandemic is persistent." This virus normally causes mild disease among birds and hasn't been reported to infect humans until this recent case. The infected patient reported a fever across multiple days before he went to the hospital for treatment. The Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention is making sure to contact trace and monitor that area where the patient resides in order to monitor if there are additional cases. |
